Factories are complex organizations. They have grown in size tremendously and require huge quantities of raw materials, machinery, spare parts, and other items, all of which need to be stored in a convenient place. In addition, the factory’s own outputs need to be stored as well, from finished products, to residuals.
All these items have to be identified and classified. That way they can easily be accessed and used when they’re needed. On the other hand, they have to be kept away safely when not in use, in order to keep the area clear and clean.
Organization is much more important in a factory than in a house, because it can be very expensive or even dangerous. Taking too long in finding an item can stop the manufacturing process, resulting in losses in productivity and waste of resources. On the other hand, an incorrect classification of materials can cause the machinery to break down, or worse, injuries or death. In addition, items lying around can be a safety hazard in case of an emergency that requires the staff to leave the factory, such as in an earthquake or fire.
When it comes to arranging and storing things, shelving always a good option. But when it comes to bringing some order to the many items that a factory handles, there’s nothing like steel shelving.
There are many advantages to steel shelving, however, most factory directors care about one only: resistance. Steel shelving is strong and durable, and it can resist heavy duty and rough treatment. It’s designed to resist some impacts or collisions as well. This is a great advantage in a factory, where big containers and items are frequently handled. As you can imagine, it’s hard to move a half a tone chemical drum gently, even with forklifts.
Steel shelving not only is physically resistant, but also chemically resistant. Spilling of chemicals won’t melt it, burn it or deform it, like they would with plastic or wood shelving. This is a great quality, not because it keeps the steel shelving from being destroyed, but because it means that it will keep stable and prevent further spilling from other containers. Shelving that falls apart due to corrosion is just a accident waiting to happen.
Finally, unlike other types of shelving, steel shelving needs extra assembling to give it stability. Instead of just placing the parts that fit together, like it’s the case with plastic shelving, steel shelving requires screws and bolts for assembling, which prevents it from coming apart when heavy items are placed on it.
There are many advantages to steel shelving. It’s no wonder that most industries use it on a frequent basis.
